Advent Season

Typically, when it comes to the Christmas season, I just jump in with both feet.  Life is usually crazy, and I don’t have time to think about doing anything special with my kids.  My plan this year was to start some new traditions that we will carry on, and one of the things that I plan to do is celebrate the Advent season.

Growing up, I had never even heard the word Advent.  I guess my church didn’t do it (if they did, I don’t remember), so I knew nothing about it until I was an adult.  And since I’ve started having kids, each year has been incredibly hectic.  Not that this year isn’t hectic, but we do have more time for me to think through traditions that I believe are important.

What is Advent?  It starts four weeks before Christmas, awaiting the arrival of Christmas… the coming of Jesus to earth.  The word is Latin, and it means the coming or arrival.

There are many ways to celebrate, and I have chosen two different ways…

The first is using The Jesus Storybook Bible to read scripture of the old testament, leading up to Christ’s birth.  I had never thought of using this particular Bible, but it makes the most sense.  Every single “story” speaks of Jesus.  I’m using this plan: Advent with the Jesus Storybook Bible.

This one is to focus on what Christmas is truly about… Jesus.

The second is a more light-hearted and fun way to celebrate… Having a fun family activity each day.  I will be use Life as Mom’s (free) printable for this!  It is amazing.  Check it out!

A Christmas Countdown Family Activity.

My desire for Christmas is to focus on what really matters…  Not presents.  Not things.  Not the hectic craziness of the season.  Jesus and Family.  Period.

What are your plans this Advent season?
